Triphala and Trikatu

Most diseases begin with improper digestion. Agni, the digestive fire, is essential for health. Impaired digestion causes poor circulation and complexion, gas, constipation, low energy, offensive body odor, allergies and breakdown of the immune system.

Two ancient formulas are often used to aid the digestive system: triphala and trikatu.

Triphala

"Tri" means three in Sanskrit and Triphala literally means three fruits: amalaki,  (Emblica officinalis ), bibhitaki (Terminalia belerica) and haritaki (Terminalia chebula). Triphala is classically recommended to maintain regular bowel movements.

More than "keeping the colon clean", triphala tonifies all the tissues of the body, especially the digestive tract, to release toxins, or ama, and carry them to elimination. It enhances the absorption and assimilation of nutrients. It balances all the elements.

Trikatu

Trikatu is again composed of three plants: ginger, black pepper and pippali, or Indian long pepper. Trikatu is pungent and burns up toxins by increasing the digestive fire.  Caution is necessary with Pitta dominant persons, or people with too much heat.

Readily Available

Triphala is usually taken at bedtime in 5 -15 gram doses. It is available as a powder, in capsules or tablets, and as a liquid extract.
Trikatu is usually taken just before a meal. One can substitute trikatu with mixing ginger, black pepper and cayenne.
