Abhyanga, or oil massage, is beneficial for most people, but it is especially beneficial in winter. Abyyanga can alleviate the effects of cold temperatures and dry winds. In winter blood and fluids descend into the core to keep vital organs warm. Oil massage protects against the cold and dryness. It stabilizes, warms and calms the body-mind.
Oil in Sanskrit is Sneha, also means Love
Oils penetrate through the layers even to the vital organs, hydrating and nourishing tissues and nerves. Oil stabilizes, warms and calms the nervous system, improves sleep and helps prevent constipation. The qualities of oil massage are heavy, stable, warm, and grounding.
Begin Abhyanga by warming about 1/4 cup of dosha appropriate oil by placing it in a larger bowl of hot water. Sesame is preferred for Vata and Kapha and sunflower is good for Pitta. Start with the head and move downward. Use long strokes on muscles and circular movements on joints. Use clockwise strokes on the abdomen. Let the oil soak in for 15 minutes. You can wipe off any excess and take a warm shower allowing some oil to remain on the skin. The warm shower will help the oil penetrate further into the tissues. Enjoy!
